About Me

Demelza Champagne

I help others cast spells for a more equitable society. I use trickster magic so you can write your best novel.

I am an urban Anishinaabe/Métis (indigenous) writer, enrolled in the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians. I grew up in Los Angeles and over the years I have lived in the Bay Area, DC, and Brooklyn. I now live in Temecula, CA with two cats, my niece, and brother.

I am writing my first novel; it is about the ways settler colonialism continues to effect indigenous people’s lives. My novel contains aspects of Anishinaabe folklore, decolonization, and the occult. I have an MA from San Francisco State in Women’s Studies and an MA from the New School in Anthropology (and yes, a ton of student loan debt! Fun!)

In the past I’ve worked as a social worker, for the Smithsonian, and as a dog walker. Many of my jobs have been within the Native American community. For awhile I thought I was going to be an academic, but a life-changing terrible experience in graduate school led me to crystallize my true passion: writing.

What I do:

I am an Author Accelerator certified book coach. As a book coach, my goal is to aid writers in creating works that cast a spell on the reader. I am especially excited to work with BIPOC writers and those who have an interest in the occult, witchcraft, tarot, astrology, etc. I believe that books can change the world, so I want to empower the writers I work with to write their best novels. Together we can work to create a more magical, fun, and equitable society.

If I sound like someone you’d like to work with, please get in touch.

Fun facts:

I’ve attended the VONA writing workshop twice, in 2017 and 2014.

For a few years, I considered myself an anarchist, and even lived in a communal space, until my cat Jupiter got me kicked out.

I worked as a dog walker for years and years and years, I loved it but I really should’ve charged more, because I was very very poor.

I believe that alchemy, writing, and magick are intimately connected.

Some of my favorite books:

The Odyssey (Emily Wilson translation), 2666 – Roberto Bolaño, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicles – Haruki Murakami, Love Medicine – Louise Erdrich, Circe – Madeline Miller, Trust Exercise – Susan Choi, The Flamethrowers – Rachel Kushner, I Love Dick – Chris Kraus
