After the elections, my first reaction was to turn inward and hibernate. The world was out there, and it felt contradictory and chaotic (how could Americans vote for a leader who has fascist leanings and admires authoritarian leaders?). At least the world in my mind was controllable.
During the time that I spent within, I came to some conclusions about the work that I do in service to others.
The work that I do as a book coach and an editor is important work and I feel that this work is needed more than ever.
Storytellers are needed more than ever right now.
Why?
It’s easy to dismiss fiction – I’ve heard it all my life, and I even made terrible mistakes because I had believed the false narrative that it wasn’t important enough.
But storytelling is integral to humanity and it’s integral to hope. Because storytelling allows us to dream of another world that is filled with our values, whatever those might be: antiracism, decolonization, anticapitalism, matriarchy, or sustainable living.
Storytelling allows us to imagine sexy aliens who can change genders, it allows us to see how a gift economy works, it helps us to see decolonization in action.
I want to make subversion sexy again.
So, I do this work to midwife another world into being.
My aim is to bring forth subversive stories because I believe that’s one way to change reality.
And right now we need good stories and good art more than ever.
(If you have a subversive story to tell but need accountability and guidance, please feel free to contact me or look at my offerings.)
