☿ Quick Guide to Working with Mercury ☿

Mercury is the god of commerce, writing, and magic. So it would behoove you to work with him/them. (Especially if you’re a writer or a small business owner.)

The theory behind doing magic like this, where you ask a deity for help, is that the deity is a part of your unconscious. In other words, what you’re asking the deity for is something that you are already capable of. By getting in touch with the deity, you’re getting in touch with the part of yourself that can already do what you’re asking. In a way, this type of work is an attempt to highjack your unconscious so you can create your reality.

What you desire, desires you.

Day: Wednesday

Colors: orange, mottled colors

Scents: lavender, peppermint,

Drink offerings: caffeinated drinks like coffee and tea, wine

Food offerings: olives, bread, nuts

Tarot card association: The Magician

Correspondences: hermetics, feathers, writing utensils, books, caduceus, images of Mercury.

The above correspondences can give you a good start for doing your offerings and getting to know Mercury. However, as you get to know Mercury, by intuition and synchronicity you may find other correspondences.

Directions: Set-up your altar (simple or extravagant). It’s best to do these offerings on a Wednesday.

Light some Mercury appropriate incense (lavender), and you can also light a white or orange candle with the Mercury symbol engraved or drawn into it. Call to Mercury with your appreciations, or write your own appreciations to him. Another option is to read the Orphic Hymns to Mercury. After calling to Mercury and listing your appreciations, tell him/them about the offerings, you can run the offerings through the incense smoke, then leave them on your altar. (Dispose of the offerings the next day, don’t consume them!) After this you can ask Mercury for help. Then close out your ritual.

During the week, keep up the magic and embody Mercury. Wear the color orange or gold. Wear lavender scents. Study languages, writing, and grammar. Write. Create spells. Record your dreams. Hang out and support other Mercury inclined folks: witches, astrologers, writers, thieves, and small business owners.

While working with Mercury, be on the look out for synchronicities. Synchronicities, according to my dictionary, are “the simultaneous occurrence of events which appear significantly related but have no discernible causal connection.” Synchronicities I’ve experienced while working with Mercury are things like: meeting Mercury in a lucid dream, finding feathers, meeting someone named Mercury, constantly passing Vespas, seeing a copy of Promethea in a car, etc. Anything that you associate with Mercury will appear, this is a sign that you are in the Mercury current.

During Mercury Retrograde: Just run for cover! No, I kid!

Mercury retrograde is a great time to review, rewrite, and return to projects you’re working on. I get some of my best rewriting and editing done during Mercury retrograde, because the energy is there instead of in creating something new.

Mercury retrograde happens about 3 times a year, and it’s the perfect time to review the projects you’re working on.
