My experience working on my novel has involved a lot of re-writing. I re-trace my characters, I meet them again, I re-write them. They have a story to tell, and it is my job to get their story correct. But the story only comes through after I re-write and refine it.

When I was younger I had the idea that a writer just wrote – but writing a novel, or even a short story, is a complex undertaking.

Writing is like walking through a labyrinth: you circle around, reach dead-ends, and it takes time to find your way.
